FAQ

  • Do I need to have experience?
The short answer is no! If you want to join one of our community choirs - then no, you don't need to have any experience to come and join us. When you come along to a Free Taster Session you'll be joining us for a full rehearsal to see who we are and what we do, and we will teach you everything you need to know during that session, all you have to do is get step through the door! We teach all the music by ear, so you don't have to be able to read music eaither. Some people can be put off by the fact that we don't hold auditions - but that doesn't mean that we don't have standards or work hard! We just believe that choirs and singing should be accessible to everyone - whether you've had a music education or not, or the opportunity to sing in a choir before! If you want to join our soul & gospel choir - you don't need to be able to read music as we teach by ear (I don't believe you have to be able to read dots in order to have good musicality and a great voice!) but we do expect our singers to have some experience under their belt and be confident singers. More information on our audition process below!
  • Which choir is right for me?
Our choirs have the same ethos at their core - but each have their own flavour! Which choir you choose will depend on what you're looking for, and possibly where you are. Carers & Co Choir - for people who are, or have been, carers of any kind. You don't have to currently be caring to join us, but it's great for some respite as well as meeting other carers. Leith - Community choir (no audition) singing a mixture of pop, soul, funk, rock, generally contemprary tunes, in the heart of Leith. Central - Community choir (no audition) - similar vibe to the Leith group but in the heart of town! Soul & Gospel choir - for people who have more experience, want a bit of a challenge, and enjoy a soul / gospel style of singing.
  • What do I need to bring with me?
    - Yourself, and some good energy! - A bottle of water That's it we'll do the rest!
  • What's the audition for the Soul & Gospel Choir?
Firstly, you get to join us for a full rehearsal so that you get to see what it is that we do - and it's up to you if you want to stay and audition if you enjoyed yourself and you want to join us! The auditions are only infront of Kat (MD) and Adam (Assist.MD) - we promise not to bite, but we do want to know a bit more about you, and your experience with music & singing in general (there's not a standard of music education / experience that we're looking for - we just want to know more about your experiences!). Then we'll ask you to sing back some notes from the piano to gague your range and pitching, and you sing one verse & chorus of any song of your choosing. It doesn't have to be a full song - just a section that gives us a good example of your voice. Song choice: it's completely up to you, but remember that we are a soul and gospel choir, so we're looking for voices that fit those styles! So aim for a song that let's you show that style off! We know auditioning is horrible (it always is!) so it's fine to have lyrics and fine to make some small mistakes - we're mainly listening out for your musicality and tone/style! If you've got any specific questions then please don't hestitate to drop us a line!
